Community Outreach

Community Outreach Program in SMAN 30 Jakarta
By Ignasia Yuyun

The life of a man consists not in seeing visions and in dreaming dreams, but in active charity and in willing service” (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)

As an evidence of its contribution to the community, UKRIDA Language Training Center (ULTC) not only conducting profit services to the public, but also offering non-profit services such as a community outreach program. It was then an English Club designed for Senior High School students in SMAN 30 Jakarta, located in Cempaka Putih, Central Jakarta became our choice for this program.
SMAN 30 and ULTC have developed a very good contact since the ULTC Open Competition conducted in 2009. SMAN 30 was one of the winners in the Interpretation Category. Being impressed by Ibu Rosy Nilawati, the English Club coordinator’s effort to develop SMAN 30 students’ English skills and knowing that two of SMAN 30 alumni, Inge Pradita (Medicine 2010) and Wega Nanda Marissa (Psychology 2010) were currently studying in UKRIDA encouraged ULTC to assist this public school’s English Club, called TECVC (Thirty English Conversation Votari Club). The idea was to help developing SMAN 30 students’ English skill especially in their speaking ability.
Started on November 1, 2010, the English Club program ran for 15 meetings. The program initially developed by Ms. Yunias Monika, ULTC former instructor, was regularly conducted once a week for 30-hours session. It involved approximately 20 students. All ULTC instructors took turns to teach the students on Mondays. This 30-hour program covered general English topics that are relevant to students’ daily lives, such as Introductions, Greetings, Congratulations, Apologies, Helping Each Other, More about You, Expressing Sympathy, Favourite Foods, Future Plans, Hopes, and Dreams, Learning Styles, Shopping for Clothes, Around Town, Emergency Care, Finding the Right Home, Places to Live, and some special topics.
Moreover, the English Club program provides an opportunity to share opinions and experiences actively since ULTC always emphasizes learner’s activity in all of its programs. To enrich the participants, some cultural issues were brought up for cross-cultural comparison and discussions. To make the activities more fun and enjoyable, the ULTC instructors always included various games, role plays, and group discussions. The students were enthusiastically involved in all activities they stayed late at school since the program was conducted after school hours.
After approximately 6 months, the program finally finished on May 23, 2011. Ms. Rosy Nilawati expressed many thanks to UKRIDA and ULTC for the contribution to enhance the SMAN 30 students’ English speaking abilities. She stated that the students are now confident to speak in English. ULTC highly appreciated the opportunity and warm welcome that SMAN 30 principal, teachers and students extended throughout the entire program. All of the ULTC instructors wish that the SMAN 30 students will continue practicing their English and look forward to meeting them in other future events. Below we included messages from Ibu Rosy, SMAN 30 students, and alumnus, Inge Pradita about the English Club. ULTC is seeking more opportunities to give other contributions to the community.

(Pembina OSIS dan Pembina Ekskul TECVC SMAN 30 Jakarta)

Hearing the word ‘UKRIDA’, I absolutely remember to the great lecturers with sincerity willing to help our school, SMAN 30 Jakarta, in improving the quality of our English Club, TECVC (Thirty English Conversation Votari Club). They are Miss Ira, Miss Vanye, Miss Ignas, Mr. Chrisna, Mr.  Ardi dan Mr.  David, who tirelessly visited our school and trained our students. The students were equipped with very useful materials to prepare English competitions or enrich their English skills. “It is hard to end this joint program since it is difficult to find a big institution like UKRIDA as a partner in building students’ skill. Besides, it’s free, no charge”. We think UKRIDA through ULTC has made a big contribution and it is really meaningful for us. Go UKRIDA, keep up the dedication to the nation. We pray for UKRIDA that UKRIDA will last and succeed in education world in Indonesia. Thank you so much, UKRIDA. We love you so much.

English is a prerequisite for many fields especially in education since most of materials are in English. Therefore, the existence of a language center, such as UKRIDA Language Training Center (ULTC) is beneficial. My alma mater, SMAN 30 Jakarta, got a good opportunity to have a joint program with ULTC in improving the students’ English skills. “My dear friends in SMAN 30, keep up your spirit in learning English since English is beneficial for your future. Take any opportunities to practice your English at school including English Club. So, be diligent!J.”
