“BEFRIENDING THE EARTH”
UKRIDA English Competition 2010 held from October 5 to 8, 2010 was sponsored by UKRIDA Admission and Public Relation Division and UKRIDA Language Training Center (ULTC). This year UKRIDA extends the theme of “Befriending the Earth” for its competition with the hope to promote environmental awareness among young people and increase their participation in environmental protection. As the UKRIDA rector stated in his opening ceremony greetings, “this event is not just a competition looking for the best one among the competitors, but a way in which UKRIDA may help its community, the Indonesian youth to be active participants in the world.” A total of 103 students and teachers from 22 schools around Jakarta area participated in various competition categories. The following are brief reports on each category:
Prepared Speech
Prepared Speech Contest was organized in two rounds: preliminary round and final round. Seventeen contestants, coming from twelve senior high schools such as Global Prestasi School, SMA Santa Ursula BSD, SMA Negeri I Tangerang, Baptist Elim Senior High School, SMAK 5 Penabur, SMA Tirtamarta, SMAK Sang Timur, SMAN 99 Jakarta Timur, SMAN 88 Jakarta, SMA Ketapang III, SMAK I Penabur and SMA Suluh Jakarta, joined the preliminary round, held on Tuesday, 5 October at 9.30-15.00. During the contest, the participants were asked to deliver five-to-seven minute speech with the theme “Befriending the Earth.”
At the end of the preliminary round, nine contestants were chosen as the finalists. The final round, held on Friday, 8 October at 13.30-15.00, featured five-to-seven impromptu speech with the theme “Jakarta is sinking.” Among nine finalists, three were selected as the winners at the end of the final round. The winners included Cassandra Sihombing from Global Prestasi School (The First Winner), Sarah Septiani from SMA Santa Ursula BSD (The Second Winner), and Vincent T from SMAK I Penabur (The Third Winner). Serving as judges in this speech contest were Ira Rasikawati from Ukrida Language Training Center (ULTC), David Lopez from Ukrida Language Training Center (ULTC) and Dewi Kumalasari from the Ukrida Student Affairs. Story Telling
The story telling competition of UC (Ukrida Competition) 2010 was held on the first day after the opening ceremony of UC 2010 which took place at the Auditorium, in 7th floor of building E. About 19 participants from 13 schools took part of this competition. After the participants competed very well from 10:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., the judges, Mr. Krisna (the head of the judges), Ms. Hannah Solelisa, and Ms. Lidia decided on 8 participants to go to the final round.
The final round of story telling competition was held on the last day of UC 2010, which took place on Friday, October 8, 2010. All of the finalists seem to have prepared very well to win this category. Some of them were telling different stories to the ones they’ve told in the preliminary rounds. They really impressed the judges with their funny and expressive performances. The Judges for the final round of story telling competition were Mr. Krisna, Mr. Christoper Mullin, and Mr. David Lopez. They chose the three best performers to become the winners the winners over the eight finalists. The 1st place went to Fernando Fen Lee from SMA Ora Et Labora, the 2nd place was awarded to Kezia from SMAK 7 Penabur, and the 3rd place rewarded Claudia from SMA Santa Ursula BSD. (Novy Lim)
Interpretation
The participants of the interpretation competition came from four different schools. They all performed a drama about how to save and befriend the earth. The competition took place in the auditorium, from 10.00 a.m. until 11.30 a.m. on Friday, October 8, 2010. The judges for this competition were Mr. David Lopez as the head of the judges, Mr. Christoper Mullin, and Ms. Dewi Kumalasari. Three best performers were selected, they were SMA Sang Timur (1st Winner), SMAN 99 Jakarta (2nd Winner) and SMAK 2 Penabur (3rd Winner). (Novy Lim)
Debate
As a way to develop public speaking skills, Ukrida Debate Competition 2010 was held for two days. The preliminary round was done on Wednesday (6 October 2010) and Final Round on Friday, 8 October 2010. Both rounds were knock-out format in which only winners will advance. The participants came from SMA Santo Andreas, SMAK 1 Penabur, SMAK 5 Penabur, SMAK 7 Penabur, SMAK Sang Timur, SMAK Yosef, SMA Ketapang 3, SMA Mahatma Gading, and SMAN 99. The finalists were SMAK 1 Penabur, SMAK 5 Penabur, and SMAK 7 Penabur. On the final day, the first winner went to SMAK 1 Penabur, followed by SMAK 5 Penabur, and SMAK 7 Penabur. In this debate competition, the team had three minute speech for each speaker and two minute speech for reply speaker. Both teams had twenty minutes for pairings. During Preliminary rounds, the judges were Mr Priyatno Ardi from ULTC, Mr Alex from UPI, and Mr Evans, Vice Dean 3 of Ukrida Psychology Faculty. While, the judges for Final round were Mr Alex from UPI, Mr Jonathan Sarwono and Ms Delsy Vanye from ULTC. Overall, the competition was successful since all participants were able to deliver their arguments in the respect of debate rules and regulations. (Ignasia Yuyun)
News Casting
Newscasting competition in UC 2010 was held in two days, Thursday, 7 October 2010 for the preliminary round, and Friday, 8 October 2010 for the final round. There were 16 participants for this competition from several senior high schools such as SMAK 2 Penabur, SMAK 5 Penabur, SMAK 7 Penabur, SMU Global Prestasi, SMU Santa Ursula BSD, SMU Tirta Marta, SMU Ketapang 3 Cibubur, SMU Mahatma Gading, SMAK Ora et Labora BSD, and SMAK Sang Timur. Jennifer R. Duliamar from SMA Santa Ursula BSD got the first place after a tight competition with the second winner, Fernando Fen Lee from SMAK Ora et Labora BSD. Maria Elizabeth from SMA Santa Ursula BSD got the third place. In this newscasting competition, each participant was asked to read seven-minute to ten-minute news related to environmental issues. They had around 15 minutes to prepare. They did not have to memorize the news because they can rely on the text and the teleprompt. The judges were Ms. Melitina Tecualu, Dean of UKRIDA Economics Faculty, Ms. Hannah and Mr. Christopher Mullin from UPI, and Ms. Dewi from the UKRIDA Student Affairs. In general, it was really great to see all participants enthusiastically performed their best as newscasters. (Chrisna Buana M)
Essay Writing – Competition for Teachers
Essay writing competition was conducted on October 7, 2010 with the topic “Innovative Teaching and Learning Method”. There were 8 participants from senior and junior high school as well as elementary school teachers around Jakarta. Various topics related to the teaching and learning method were discussed in their paper. From the paper submitted to the committee, judges decided to divide their paper into two categories based on the originality of ideas proposed by the participants. Each category generated three winners. The works which were included in the first category contained original ideas and showed something new; while the works included in the second category contained synthesis of various other published author that were quoted by the participants. The winners of the first category are Sanny with the paper entitled “Effective Teaching in Four Essay Steps” from SD Kristen St. John, Jl. Kemuning Indah IV blok HH Harapan Indah Bekasi as the first winner; Maria Yuniar Ardhiati with the paper entitled “The Use of Facebook for Learning English Grammar” from SMK Kristen Saint John, Jl. Bungur Besar 82 A, Jakarta Pusat as the second winner; and Syahwarta with the paper entitled “The Effectiveness Inquiry Method with Classroom Management” from Saint John Junior High School Jakarta. From the second category, the judge decided to select three outstanding papers instead of winners. Those three participants who were selected as three outstanding writers in the competition are Alvin Serenado Tismo with the paper entitled “Innovative Teaching and Learning Method Through Student-Centered Approach”, from Global Prestasi School Kompleks GPS Jl. K.H. Noer Alie number 10B Bekasi; Gugun Tambunan with the paper entitled “Innovative Teaching and Learning Method” from S.D. Kristen Saint John, Jl. Bungur Besar 82 Jakarta; and Susannah with the paper entitled “How to be a Creative and Inspiring English Teacher to Senior High School Students” from SMA Mahatma Gading, Boulebard BGR, Villa Gading Indah Block D Kelapa Gading Jakarta Utara. UC 2010 was closed on Friday, October 8, by Dr. Stefanus Soejanto Sandjaja, MSi, the Dean of Psychology Faculty who represented the Rector of UKRIDA. It was a hectic but very fun week for all of the UC 2010 committee. We hope that the event will enhance our English communication skills and friendship bond between UKRIDA and other highs school students and teachers.
